When most people think of love, they think of the romantic kind. It’s a deep feeling of affection and passion that we experience for another person. We always want to be around them, and our hearts ache when we’re not. Romantic love is lovely, but it’s only one type of love. There is another kind of love, a spiritual kind, that is just as powerful and meaningful as romantic love but in a different way.
The spiritual definition of love is a unique creation that allows us to experience the most profound kind of connection with other people, thoughts, and sacred things. This love is not defined by what we feel for another person but by our connection to the Divine. It’s a deep feeling of peace, joy, and happiness that comes from knowing that we are all connected to something much bigger than ourselves.
When we experience spiritual love, we feel connected to the divine. We can also see the beauty in others and ourselves more clearly.
John 3:16:
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Typically, from this verse, I wouldn’t be wrong if I defined love as being “unconditional.”
Why?
This is because it’s not based on external looks, status, or achievements. Instead, spiritual love is internal and comes from a place of peace and happiness.
It’s also not based on what we can get from another person. We don’t love someone because they make us feel good or give us what we want. We love them because they are part of the Divine, and we are connected to them.
This kind of love is also different from romantic love because it’s not possessive. We don’t try to control or change the other person. We accept them as they are.
The spiritual definition of love is about feeling connected, protected, and accessible.
Signs You’re Experiencing Spiritual Love
So, we have been emphasizing the definition of spiritual love, but have you questioned if you have experienced it? I understand it is an abrupt question, but ideally, if you think about it, you will have an immediate answer. But wait, what if you haven’t? How would you know?
Here are 10 signs you’re spiritually connected to a person.
- There is Equality in Spiritual Love
Most people can’t define “equality” in love. I asked several couples to define what “equality” looks like in a relationship, and I received something different from what I expected. Typically, roles come in when two people in love decide to settle down. What I mean is duties come automatically.
Furthermore, you can serve as support for each other and respect one another’s talents enough to let them work their miracles in your relationship. In Spiritual love, you feel like you’re on the same level. You’re not trying to outdo or one-up your partner. This even plays a significant role in boosting trust for them.
What I like about this sign is that it gives a sense of “no pressure.” For example, in a stable relationship, the guy is always expected to make the first move, take the initiative, and be the breadwinner. At the same time, the girl is always supposed to look pretty, cook, and clean. But in a spiritually connected relationship, both partners are comfortable taking turns making decisions and doing things for each other. There’s no pressure to perform or meet expectations. You can just be yourself and allow your partner to do the same.
- Uplifted Honesty
In spiritual love, you don’t have to worry about being judged for your thoughts and feelings. You can be completely honest with each other because you know that your partner will accept you no matter what. This deep level of trust allows you to be vulnerable with each other and share your innermost thoughts and feelings. At the same time, you don’t work to break the trust but boost it even more. What is better than having a partner who can’t judge you for who you’re?
- Your Love, Your Comforter
Your favorite person in the universe is your sanctuary. You can go to them for anything and everything because they will be there. They provide a safe space to express yourself without fear of judgment or rejection. In return, you do the same for them. You become each other’s confidante and best friend. In short, you’re very comfortable around them, so do they? You’re their “home,” and they appreciate that.
- A Sense of Oneness
When you’re spiritually connected to someone, you feel as if you’re one with them. You share a deep level of understanding and compassion for each other. This doesn’t mean that you always agree with each other or that you never have disagreements. It just means that when you disagree, you can see things from their perspective and find a resolution that works for both of you. You can also forgive each other more easily because you understand each other’s intentions. You feel like you share a spirit or soul as distinguished by having the same values, ideas, and goals.
- A Deeper Intimacy
Talking of intimacy, most people would typically think of physical or sexual closeness. But there is another more profound level of intimacy: spiritual love. This love goes beyond the physical and emotional to a place of deep connection and spiritual union.
Spiritual love is not about lust or power; it’s about connection, respect, and a deep understanding of one another. It’s about seeing each other’s souls and honoring the Divine within each other. When we are in a spiritual relationship, we are in harmony with the universe and its inhabitants.
- A Strong Desire to Help Each Other Grow
1 Corinthians 16:14: “Let all that you do be done in love.”
In my relationship, my partner and I constantly push each other to be better people. We want each other to grow and become the best possible versions of ourselves. We know that we can’t do this alone, so we support each other and encourage each other to reach our goals. We also have a deep understanding and compassion for each other, which allows us to forgive easily. You can do this too!
- Facts and Feelings
Yes! I know you did not expect this, but I had to put it here. Some people would love to read this and get all psyched up about “spiritual love,” but in the end, they will be like, “it is all feelings.” But that is not the case here. You see, when you are spiritually connected to someone, there are certain things that you feel. A sign of a healthy and committed relationship is that you will have the occasional argument.
Contrary to popular belief, not every couple is in a bad relationship. However, you will feel frustrated with some things they say. To avoid misunderstandings, have a conversation instead of resorting to quotes. Let your partner explain what they meant.
- Hopeful For A Great Future Together
How far do you see your relationship in 5 years? 10 years? Do you see yourselves growing old together, or do you think it will fizzle out eventually? Spiritual connection gives you a strong desire to stay together and grow old. You will also be more likely to work through the tough times because you know your relationship is worth fighting for.
- Faithfulness
If you genuinely love someone, their beauty is incomparable. You’ll surely see someone better, good-looking, wealthier, and more successful than your partner, but you’ll never leave or cheat on them because you appreciate what they offer. Likewise, your partner may not have all the worldly things you desire, but they are beautiful to you. You see their soul, you love and be loved back. That is what matters to you, a spiritual connection that helps you remain faithful to them regardless.
- A Good Balance of Time Together and Apart
In a spiritual relationship, you can find a balance between being together and spending time apart. Of course, having your hobbies, interests, and friends is essential. But at the same time, you also know that your partner is integral to your spiritual life. So you make time for each other, even when you’re busy.
You don’t feel suffocated by each other, but you also don’t feel like you’re neglecting your relationship. Ideally, you have a healthy balance of time together and apart.
What If Your Relationship Lacks Spiritual Connection?
If you don’t have a spiritual connection with your partner, that’s okay. Not every relationship is meant to be spiritual, but there is always room for improvement as you put in some effort. To create a deeper connection with your partner, here are some things you can do:
- Talk about your values and beliefs.
- Spend time in nature together.
- Pray or meditate together.
- Do something creative together.
- Heal any past wounds or traumas.
Creating a spiritual connection with your partner takes time, effort, and patience. It’s not something that happens overnight. But it’s possible if you’re both committed to deepening your relationship!
Spiritual Definition and Religion
One of the most common misconceptions about spiritual love is that it’s synonymous with religion. Spiritual love is not necessarily tied to any one religion or the church. It is a feeling or an experience that can transcend religious boundaries. This is love consisting of a spirit of deep connection with another person, which is at the heart of all religions.
Here are some of the most common explanations for the origins of love according to different religious beliefs:
Christianity: Love is a gift from God meant to be shared with others.
Islam: Love is an act of worship and a way to please Allah.
Judaism: Love is a commandment from God.
Buddhism: Love arises naturally from our own Buddha nature.
So, ideally, religions are systems of belief that often include teachings on love and how to express it. But at its core, spiritual love is something that comes from within. It is an experience of oneness with another person that goes beyond the physical.
Key Takeaway
1 Corinthians 13:4–8
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never ends.”
This is what a spiritual connection looks like. If you have this with your partner, cherish it! It’s a unique and rare thing that gives you a better approach to life. Enriching your spirituality is what I preach. The spiritual definition of love is my word of the day!!
