Why Meditate?

There was a disciple once. He loved his guru and was devoted to him unconditionally. The disciple carried on with his worldly duties and made it a point to visit his guru at every possible opportunity to serve him and hear his discourses. Living the life of a householder, however, and taking care of his worldly responsibilities, he found little time to meditate to actually put into practice the instructions of his guru. His morality, his integrity, his conduct, his virtues were second to none.

One day, he went to his guru who was delivering a sermon at the time. His guru was talking about how it is possible for God to manifest different forms based on a devotee’s belief. The disciple listened to the discourse intently.

Afterwards, he approached his guru and said, “Is it fair to say that God is one and that the same God lives in all?”
“If I say ‘Yes’, you will think you have understood without understanding,” the guru said, “and if I say ‘No’ you will misunderstand.”
“So, if you are serious about finding the answer, follow the discipline and meditate. It will dawn on you,” he added.
The guru further spoke, “Why take my definition? Let God reveal himself to you and then you can count whether he is one, many or none!”

If intellectual understanding alone could do the trick, all the educated would be enlightened. Hearing, reading, or some hazy pseudo-meditation alone will only condition you robbing you of your free thought. You may want to read about the first step in meditation.

At least initially, follow a discipline of meditating, of devotional service. Meditate and once your mind is tamed, you will gain insight.

Discover your own truth.

Peace.

A GOOD STORY

There were four members in a household. Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. A bill was overdue. Everybody thought Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it but Nobody did it.

It's a good thing to do today.
